Today, H.H. Pope Tawadros II, with the participation of a number of Bishops, consecrated El-Malak El-Bahary Church, Hadaeq Al Qubbah, Cairo, after it has been renovated.
The history of establishment of this church goes back to over 130 years, as it was built in 1893. The main altar is named on Archangel Michael, another altar is named on St. Mary, St. Joachim and St. Anne and another altar named on St. Anthony and St. Paul.
H.H. unveiled the commemorative plaque that dates the church’s consecration upon arrival and took a memorial picture with H.G. Bishop Mikhael, General Bishop of Hadaia El Qobba and El-Waili, Cairo, and with other Bishops who have attended the prayers.
H.H. also have visited the gallery of photos and the church’s belongings that contains historical pictures, some of which are for the visits of H.H. Pope Kirollos VI, H.H. Pope Shenouda III and H.H. Pope Tawadros II visits, as well as old church’s belongings.
The procession of H.H. then headed to the church to start the prayers of consecration. After the prayers, H.H. Pope Tawadros II and H.E. Metropolitan Danial, Metropolitan of Maadi and Holy Synod Secretary, and the Bishops have signed an inauguration document of the Church.
H.H. and the Bishops have then prayed the Liturgy, during which H.H. delivered a sermon where H.H. explained the Gospel of the Liturgy which was a part of Matthew chapter 13 and has three of the parables of our Lord Jesus Christ:
1. The parable of tares and wheat – and this makes us think of the question: why is there evil in the world? H.H. then emphasized that is parable invites us to think and look towards Heaven and not to stop at negative matters.
2. The parable of mustard seed, which was described in the parable as being the least of all seeds – this explains to us not underestimate the little that we own, as it can grow and prosper and we can harvest its fruits.
3. The parable of leaven, which gives us reassurance that God’s grace in us makes our work stronger and more influential and greater than our capabilities because of the grace of God that is working in us, same as when a meal is leavened.
Before concluding the sermon, H.H. commended the renovation of the church while preserving its old Coptic style.
