His Holiness Pope Tawadros II prayed the Liturgy on the feast of the martyrdom of St. George, this morning at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Alexandria.
The liturgy was attended by the general bishops of the districts in Alexandria, Father Abraam Emil, Patriarchal Vicar in Alexandria, a large number of priests from Alexandria, and the congregation who filled the corners of the great church there.
In the sermon of the liturgy, His Holiness spoke about the many feasts of martyrs and saints in the month of May, such as St. George the Martyr, St.Mark the martyr, St. Pope Athanasius the Apostolic, St. Demiana the Martyr and St. Anba Pachomius the great.
H.H. pointed out that our Lord Jesus Christ before His Ascension said:
“you shall be witnesses to Me”
(Acts 1:8 )
This means that witnessing has many forms, including:
– Witnessing by the power of faith (St.George).
– Evangelism (St. Mark)
– Preserving faith and teaching (Pope Athanasius the Apostolic), whose writings made St. Augustine the bishop repent
– Persistence and Courage (St. Demiana the Martyr)
– Welcoming the strangers and the life of the company (Anba Pachomius the father of spiritual communal monastic life).
