Today (Thursday), H.H. Pope Tawadros II received a delegation from the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church at the Papal Headquarters in Cairo. The delegation included His Eminence Metropolitan Abouna Basilios, the General Administrator of the Church, and Father Barakat, Head of the Department of External Relations and Ceremonies of the Eritrean Holy Synod. Father Barakat handed Pope Tawadros a letter from the Eritrean Holy Synod regarding church procedures for the election of a new Patriarch of Eritrea.
The delegation discussed these matters with the Coptic Orthodox delegation, which included His Eminence Metropolitan Danial (Metropolitan of Maadi and Secretary of the Holy Synod), His Grace Bishop Angelos (General Bishop of Northern Shoubra), His Grace Bishop Bigol (Bishop and Abbot of the Al-Muharraq Monastery), and His Grace Bishop Dioscorus (Bishop and Abbot of the Monastery of St. John the Short on the Alexandria-Alamein road).
This meeting took place in accordance with the protocol signed between the Coptic Orthodox Church and the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahdo Church, which calls for the participation of either Church in the procedures for the election of a new Patriarch.
It was agreed that the elections will take place in Eritrea on December 9th, and the enthronement ceremony of the new Patriarch will be held in Asmara, the capital, in January 2025.
