Today (Wednesday), H.H. Pope Tawadros II welcomed Rev. Dr. Jerry Pillay, General Secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), and his accompanying delegation at the Papal Residence in Cairo.
Rev. Dr. Pillay expressed his happiness at visiting Egypt for the first time, praising the participation of several Coptic Orthodox bishops in the WCC’s Central Committee and other committees, commending their notable activity and exceptional contributions.
He also thanked the Coptic Orthodox Church for its role in preserving the Christian faith through the ages and for offering profound spirituality and teachings that continue to inspire and benefit Christians worldwide.
Rev Dr. Pillay emphasized the WCC’s extensive efforts to promote global peace, stressing the importance of working toward justice and societal peace.
In response, His Holiness gave the visitors an overview of the history of Egypt and the Coptic Orthodox Church, highlighting the Church’s good relations with all segments of Egyptian society. Pope Tawadros reaffirmed the strength of national unity in Egypt, emphasizing that while the Coptic Church does not engage in politics, it actively participates in national and societal development efforts for the welfare of the country.
His Holiness concluded by confirming the Church’s commitment to fostering values of practical love and peaceful coexistence.
The meeting was attended by His Eminence Metropolitan Tomas, Metropolitan of El Qusiya and Mir, and His Grace Bishop Abraham General Bishop of Los Angeles.
