H.H. Pope Tawadros II congratulated the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church on the election of a new patriarch. This was during his weekly sermon at the Wednesday meeting, held this evening at the Church of Virgin Mary and St. George in El Shorouk City.
Pope Tawadros said: “The Eritrean Church, which was established by the Coptic Church in 1997 and saw the ordination of its first patriarch, recently mourned the passing of its last patriarch, Abune Qerlos. They began the process of electing a new patriarch. As per the protocol between our Coptic Church and theirs, a delegation from one Church participates in the election of the other’s patriarch. Accordingly, we sent a delegation of fathers to participate in their patriarchal elections. Three bishops were nominated, and one was elected: Abune Basilios, who will be ordained next month as their sixth patriarch. This is joyful news.”
He added: “We congratulate them and are happy and joyful that the affairs of this Church are stabilizing, allowing them to continue their ministry in peace and glorify Christ.”
