H.H. Pope Tawadros II welcomed members of the Church delegation returning from Eritrea at the Papal Residence in Cairo. The delegation had participated in the election of the new Patriarch of the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church. The delegation included His Eminence Metropolitan Danial (Metropolitan of Maadi and Secretary of the Holy Synod), His Grace Bishop Angelos (General Bishop of Northern Shoubra), His Grace Bishop Bigol (Bishop and Abbot of the Monastery of Virgin Mary/Al-Muharraq Monastery at Mount Qusqam in Assiut), His Grace Bishop Discorus (Bishop and Abbot of the Monastery of Saint John the Short on the Alamein Road) and Deacon Joseph Rizk (the Pope’s deacon).
The delegation presented a report to His Holiness about their visit, highlighting the positive atmosphere and warm reception they experienced in every place throughout their stay. This included the welcome they received from the Eritrean Holy Synod, more than half of whose members awaited the delegation at the airport in the capital, Asmara, as well as the Eritrean people.
The report also conveyed the message of gratitude and appreciation from the Eritrean Holy Synod to H.H. Pope Tawadros II for sending the delegation to participate in the elections. It further detailed the orderly and peaceful election process, which resulted in the victory of Abune Basilios, who received the highest votes and will be enthroned as Patriarch in January.
Pope Tawadros expressed his joy at the successful completion of the election and the selection of the new Patriarch for the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo Church. He wished them continued peace and fruitful pastoral service.
