H.H. Pope Tawadros II led the New Year’s Eve prayers for the year 2025 at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Alexandria.
His Holiness visited the nativity scene that had been set up in the cathedral courtyard and expressed his admiration, encouraging the team responsible for its design and execution.
The prayers began with the Midnight Prayer, followed by Kiahk praises interspersed with words from the general bishops overseeing the pastoral sectors of Alexandria: Their Graces Bishop Bavly, Bishop Elarion, and Bishop Hermina. The praise concluded, after which His Holiness delivered a speech. He began by congratulating everyone on the start of the new year, 2025, noting its significance as marking the completion of the first quarter of the 21st century.
Pope Tawadros reflected on the number 25 through three encouraging meanings derived from the numbers 5 and 2, as mentioned in the Holy Bible:
1. The Miracle of the Five Loaves and Two Fish: A miracle of fulfillment and blessings. May God make this year one of fulfillment and blessings, emphasizing that true fulfillment and satisfaction come from delighting in the Lord.
2. The Parable of the Five Sparrows Sold for Two Copper Coins: A reminder of God’s watchful eye, guarding and protecting us from many dangers. This is a year of protection and reassurance in Christ’s hands. It is essential to remain close to God to experience His care.
3. Matthew Chapter 25: The parable of the ten virgins, which calls us to vigilance and readiness. Therefore, we should dedicate this year to spiritual preparation and vigilance.
After his sermon, His Holiness prayed heartfelt prayers for world peace and for reassurance to prevail everywhere.
The prayers were followed by the Divine Liturgy for the first day of the new year.
