This morning, H.H. Pope Tawadros II prayed the Divine Liturgy of the Feast of Nayrouz (the Coptic New Year) at Saint Mark’s Cathedral in Alexandria. He was joined by Their Graces, the bishops serving in Alexandria: Bishop Pavly (Montazah district) and Bishop Hermina (East Alexandria district), together with Fr. Abram Emil (the General Deputy of the Patriarchate in Alexandria), along with a number of priests and the church’s deacons’ choir. The congregation filled the cathedral.
In his sermon, His Holiness expressed his greetings to the Copts on the Feast of Nayrouz and the beginning of a new year. He reflected on the phrase, “Your name is sweet and blessed in the mouths of Your saints”—a line chanted in the Psali of Saturday. His Holiness then offered four exhortations for living in the fear of God throughout the new year:
1. A life of thanksgiving and contentment.
2. A life of repentance and continual renewal.
3. A new promise: to begin the year with a spiritual vow, live by it, and apply it daily.
4. A life of service: striving diligently to serve and moving one’s heart with compassion toward those in need.
