Croatian Radio conducted an interview with His Holiness Pope Tawadros II as part of His Holiness’ current visit to Croatia, which began last Saturday.
The interview was hosted by Croatian radio presenter Annabella Leko and addressed several topics, most notably the purpose of His Holiness’ visit to Croatia, the history of the Coptic Church, the situation of Christians in Egypt, his views on the persecution faced by Christians in some parts of the world, and relations with the Catholic Church.
During the interview, His Holiness expressed his hope that members of the Coptic Orthodox Church residing in Croatia would soon have a church in which to pray, while also expressing his gratitude to the Croatian authorities for welcoming and supporting the members of the Church.
His Holiness also spoke about the ancient history of the Coptic Church and its distinguished role within the Christian world.
Responding to a question regarding alleged persecution of Christians in Egypt, His Holiness stated:
“This is not true. Terrorist attacks targeted churches and mosques alike, and even government institutions. The state cooperates greatly, and in Egypt we live in complete love between Muslims and Christians.”
Regarding the persecution faced by Christians in some regions of the world, His Holiness said:
“It is noticeable that there is an increase in hatred and an absence of love, as well as a lack of tolerance. Therefore, we call for dialogue in all societies for the sake of peace.”
Speaking about relations with the Catholic Church, His Holiness described them as strong, noting that they began more than fifty years ago and that dialogue sessions between the two Churches have continued for over twenty years.
Concerning the date of Easter, His Holiness pointed out that during the First Ecumenical Council of Nicaea in 325 AD, it was agreed that the See of Alexandria would determine the date of the Feast. He expressed his hope that the day would come when all Christians celebrate Easter together, even if the date varies from year to year.
In response to a question regarding disagreements between the Pope of the Vatican and the President of the United States, His Holiness answered:
“I am a spiritual leader, not a political leader. But it is important that both sides understand one another,” calling on all leaders to live with peace and wisdom for the good of all peoples.
Speaking about Egypt, His Holiness said:
“Egypt is the heart of the world, and we say about Egypt that it is ‘Om El Donia’ — the Mother of the World.”
