H.H. Pope Tawadros II: The Journey of This Church Reminds Us of the Verse, “Those who sow in tears Shall reap in joy”

H.H. Pope Tawadros II attended the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Church of Virgin Mary and St. Cyril the Pillar of Faith in Cleopatra, Alexandria, marking fifty years since the celebration of the first Divine Liturgy there, which was at the time prayed by the Saint Hegumen Bishoy Kamel.

The celebration took place on the sidelines of His Holiness’ weekly Wednesday Meeting, which was held at the church.

Prior to the celebration, His Holiness inaugurated the “Logos Studio” centre to serve the children and families of the church and the surrounding area. His Holiness also took a commemorative photograph with the church’s choir of deacons and unveiled a commemorative plaque documenting this occasion.

The celebration began with the Prayer of Thanksgiving and was attended by Their Graces Bishop Pavly (General Bishop of the Churches of the El-Montazah Sector), and Bishop Hermina (General Bishop of the Churches of the Eastern Alexandria Sector). Also in attendance was Hegumen Abraam Emil (General Deputy of the Patriarchate in Alexandria), Hegumen Tadros Yacoub Malaty, the priests of the church, several priests from Alexandria; and a large number of the congregation.

The celebration included a welcoming address by Hegumen Yoannes Aziz, priest of the church, who expressed his great joy at His Holiness’ presence on this special occasion. This was followed by a series of presentations, hymns, and documentaries chronicling the history of the church and the various stages it has undergone since it was originally a villa donated by a woman residing in the area to the Saint Hegumen Bishoy Kamel.

The celebration concluded with a speech by Pope Tawadros, in which he commended all the presentations and expressed his joy at this beautiful occasion. Reflecting on the church’s fifty-year journey, His Holiness quoted the verse: “Those who sow in tears Shall reap in joy.” (Psalm 126:5)
