His Grace Bishop Youssef (bishop of the diocese of the Southern United States) found a great need and request from his children in the diocese for a Coptic Orthodox Convent for nuns, to fulfill the wishes of the women desiring this holy life. Their other choices were to gain His Grace’s permission to become nuns in Egypt, or wait until the convent was established.
In June 2014, with the work and guidance of the Holy Spirit, His Grace found a place which was a college for the Catholic Church, to become the Convent of Saint Virgin Mary and Saint Demiana.
When it was discussed with His Holiness Pope Tawadros II, he rejoiced over this blessed work. His Holiness offered his recommendations, encouragement and confidence in the completion of the plan.
The convent has a church named after the Virgin Saint Mary and Saint Demiana. This church contains part of the wood of the Holy Cross, in addition to relics of Saint George and Saint Demiana.
