– Said Pasha made conscription (a compulsory military service) for everyone, including Copts, and the Pope welcomed this decision to serve as a justification for taking away the jizya (Islamic tax)
– The Pope asked the Emperor of Ethiopia to deport the English missionaries, so they caused a rift between him and Said Pasha who poisoned the Pope and died
