Question 1:
Is it possible to give more attention to having more youth activities, especially during the summer time? Also, is it possible to set up some activity or event that brings the youth of Alexandria together as a group, on a regular
basis? H.H. the Pope:
Of course group activities are good, and we have been considering this question with the Bishops, the fathers, because they are all interested as to how to better serve the youth, because the youth are the pillars of both the Church and the nation.
The idea is to have 50 young men and women from each of five Patriarchates, and so a total of 250 participants, to gather together for 3 or 4 days during the summer, and that I would spend a day with them at the monastery.
Question 2:
I feel, and there are many others who join me in this feeling, that the Church involves herself
in politics. What is your Holiness’s opinion?
H.H. the Pope:
We are in the 21st Century and I am the 118th Patriarch, and throughout the entire history of the Church she has never interfered in politics, so will she begin to do so now?
But there seems to be an intermingling between what politics is and what nationalism is, and you are right if you have gotten these two mixed-up together because in the last 30 or 40 years nationalism has been somewhat weak, and among the Copts is has also been somewhat weak, and this has been due to several different reasons. But we thank the Lord that almost 4 or five years ago, the scales began to return to balance once again.
What we get involved in is only that which concerns nationalism. And I have as I have said many times before, I personally have not studied politics, nor do I know politics, nor have I ever worked in politics, not at all, never.
But when a young man comes and asks me, “What do you think about my joining this or that political party? I tell him, “Yes, go ahead, join,” because young men and women, Muslims and Christians, all should join in and contribute to the work and to participate in the strengthening of the political parties, this is a very good thing to do. But as for the Church, as for the Coptic Orthodox Church, she does not interfere in politics. She is a nationalistic Church. She is the Church born of this dust and this land.
Take for example, we are entering into a period of constitutional adjustments and setting of legal ordinances, good, this is a duty, a right of citizenship. The Cathedral we are in today was built brick by brick by brick, until we finally have a wall. Your voice, alongside your brother’s voice, alongside your sister’s voice, constitutes an opinion!
And we tell you to participate in this setting of legal ordinances because it is a right of citizenship. It is your right to have an opinion. Is your presence a lazy presence? No, your presence is one of effectiveness. Participate, share your opinion, whatever it maybe, but do participate. But for a person to just sit there lazily, or to get the idea that there is no point, that the situation is hopeless, that is exactly what despair is. Despair.
It is not wrong to state your opinion. Any country has a Constitution and this Constitution is known as its “father of laws,” and so any law that follows must be according to this constitution.
A person or a group present a suggestion to make some changes to the constitution, this is a natural thing, that something presented five years ago may need to be adjusted and upgraded to be something even better. And do not forget the constitution that was made five years ago was made in haste because the country was in chaos.
And so when after 5 years changes are being presented today, why not? When changes for improvement are being presented, state your opinion.
And these suggested adjustments are discussed in the Parliament and they are discussed in committee dialogues, they then return to the Parliament where they decide upon it and announce, “This was how the article was and this is how it was adjusted.”
Give your opinion! Give your opinion, participate, but do not isolate yourself, do not say, “What does this have to do with me? Let me just mind my own business.” No! Everything that happens in the homeland, you must participate in it. This is a must.
The nation helps you to get an education in order that you may do a certain work – an engineer, a lawyer, an accountant, a teacher, a doctor, so that you may serve the community. Just as when you were young and you got sick they took you to a doctor, this is what community is, and those of you who study social studies know about these things.
Participate. Participate and express your opinion. This is your right. It is your right, just like it is your right to have a nationality and to have a passport, just like it is your right to have a national identity card and number; these are your rights.
Do not dare listen to the spirit of despair. Make sure that your brain is not thinking incorrectly, because all of this is being done for the sake of the nation. Young men, young women, I’m speaking from a place of responsibility, and because of this, I may be able to see a little bit further than you do, from this position of responsibility. Do you not see that we have countries around us that have been lost?
Go to Syria for example, where is the beautiful Syria? Twenty years ago I visited Syria for a week, I will never forget it, as I went around Damascus and visited the place where Christ appeared to Paul the apostle. I was there for just one week for a conference.
Where is Syria now? Where are her demolished churches? What about her demolished monasteries? Where are her abducted priests? Where has all this gone? It is because there’s no country, the country has been lost. They even want to change her name! Syria, whose name is in the Bible, they want to change her name! And I don’t even want to tell you what this new name is.
Look at countries all around us continuing to fall apart. Right next-door to us is Libya, they have a Civil War going on there. Just look at all these countries.
The greatest blessing you will sing about and give your children, is the blessing of stability in Egypt. And if you don’t like it here, no other nation will be of benefit to you, and no other country will pay you any attention.
Beware, beware, beware of those who create thoughts of despair and thoughts hopelessness, and of those who sit and talk about anything and everything but they have no solutions to offer for anything.
I plead with you, I plead with you, beware, and participate. Speak up and give your opinion as much as you like, and in this way, before your conscience you feel that you participated, and God will see all you have done.
Question 3:
How is your Holiness’s back?
H.H. the Pope:I will share with you what actually happened. I had a very serious surgery in 2017 and the doctors instructed me to do several things like to walk two kilometers every day, to not sit for more than one hour at a time, and to not stand for more than an hour at a time. And thank God, all these instructions were destroyed! And this is for reasons beyond my control, and also, travel causes me a lot of pain, but we rely on your prayers. And may the Lord keep you and protect you from the bitterness of back pain.
Question 4:
When will we see/have an episcopate for children as the episcopate we have for the youth?
H.H. the Pope:All of you were once children and you have all grown in the love and embrace of the Church, and you have become the kind of youth that bring joy to the Heart of the Lord, as you assume your responsibility in the nation and in the church, and this is the natural progression of growth and of life.
I desire that there be an episcopate for the children and as soon as the Lord finds us the appropriate person for this new work, the establishment of the children’s episcopate will commence and this episcopate will be responsible for children from age zero (from an infant who is born today) to age 15 years old. We already have the youth episcopate, with his grace Bishop Moses, and we also have the family episcopate, and in this way, the three parts will complete one another
Question 5:
I greatly benefited from the project “1,000 teachers” and I would really like for there to be additional such opportunities for the nurturing of skills, skills such as the priest fathers who served in it have. And so I hope that this will be repeated.
H.H. the Pope:
Truly, the project to train 1,000 teachers, which has been held the last three years, has had very positive effects, and I suppose that we will be having additional sessions. We are also always trying to improve and renew the Church’s instructional services, for example, we have “The Coptic College’s Management of Church Growth,” whose function it is to teach church management and administration to the fathers, and bishops, and priests, and servants. And there have already been three graduating classes, with a total of approximately 700 graduates, and this program’s manager is Dr. Magdy Latif.
Also, during the last New Priest Ordination, we dedicated 5 of the priests’ 40 days to this instruction, in order that they may learn church management at the hands of/directly by the college professors, and we have done this twice.
The whole world is advancing and we too must also advance.
Question 6:
We would like to know your Holiness’s vision and thoughts regarding the Church’s service in Alexandria, after it is sectioned into four areas.
H.H. the Pope:
Alexandria has grown, and although it is of course the traditional place for the Papal Seat, for his title is “Pope of Alexandria,” but this is being done for the purpose of the effectiveness of the Church’s care throughout the city’s numerous areas.
We took Cairo as a model for it is sectioned into 12 areas of pastoral care, and with the presence of blessed fathers such as Anba Pavli, and Anba Ilarion, and Anba Hermina here in Alexandria, we divided the city into areas so that each Bishop can oversee an individual area, and along with him a number of priest fathers and churches, for the care and teaching and problem solving [of that particular area], and the central district will be managed by the Steward of the Patriarchate here, Abouna Abram, as a way to centralize the care and activities. And when youth meetings of this size are held, as we have here today, all the districts will participate in it, for the goal is to provide pastoral care and to manage this care in an organized way. And this is also how I hope it will be within every church, that each one have a board and that her fathers work together, that we may glorify the Name of the Lord.
Question 7:
Is it true that the Minya Patriarchate will be segmented, and what
will the extent of this segmentation?
H.H. the Pope:
When God calls home a Bishop father after he has completed his
service, we begin to have meetings with the priest fathers, the church
servants, and the leaders of that particular patriarchate in order to
see how we are to proceed.
And I have met with His Grace Anba Macarius two or three times, and
one time with the priest fathers, and one time with the servant
leaders, and at this time it is all at the level of thoughts and
ideas, and until this moment we have not yet decided on a any
particular course of action.
Of course there have been things said on the Internet about this, but
we will not make a decision until after we have thoroughly studied the
matter, even if this takes years, but we must study the matter very
well. But as of today, we have not made any decisions because there
are still more hearings to be held, if the Lord wills and we live.
Question 8:
I love Liturgical studies and I am continually researching in this field, and I desired to attend the meetings of the Holy Synod’s Committee of Rites & Rituals.
H.H. the Pope:
The truth is that this Committee is a bishopric committee, only for bishops. And so if you have something to share, write it down in detail and give it to the responsible Abouna, and we will present it before the Committee.
The Holy Synod is composed of ten major committees, each committee is responsible for a different branch: monasticism, the family, countries of immigration, patriarchates, rituals, the Faith, and so on.
And there are two committees: the Secretarial Committee and the Permanent Committee. The Permanent Committee is composed of the secretaries of the committees, who are elder fathers who have vast experience and are the ones responsible for selecting the members of the other committees.
Committees meet and research what is given according to the meeting agenda, they then write the conclusions they reached in a recommendations format. This is then discussed before the Synod who is ultimately the one to decide whether to accept or reject, or advise that there is need for further study. This is an organized way of studying matters and it allows that everything the Synod studies is studied in a calm manner, in a factual manner, with prayers, and that it is well-thought out. Write what you wish and by the grace of Christ, it will be presented before them.
Question 9:
At the end of the Liturgy Abouna says, “The Holy for the holies.” Are we all saints/holy despite the sins we commit?
H.H. the Pope:
You have forgotten something, that when you attend the Liturgy and come forth to partake of Holy Communion, you must be repentant, and as long as you have repented then you are counted among the saints. But if you attend without having repented, or just out of habit, or just to receive a blessing, then this state will not apply to you.
Pay attention to the fact that we are to attend Liturgies in a repented state, and the hours that we fast before the Liturgy are for the purpose that we fast from sins, and so “the Holy for the holies” is in other words saying, “the Holy for those who are repentant,” and this is also in order that you may receive the effectiveness of the Sacrament. “Salvation and forgiveness for sins, and eternal life for those who partake of it.”
Question 10:
Aside from St. Demiana Monastery, are there any other monasteries for nuns that receive people seeking to do spiritual retreat?
H.H. the Pope:
It may be that the monasteries for nuns have limited space, but there are one or two other monasteries who accept small numbers of spiritual retreaters.
Question 11:
We read strong attacks toward your Holiness on social media and yet we find you continuing to serving the Church in utter peace and with a calm smile. What is the secret behind this?
H.H. the Pope:
The Lord has chosen us that we may serve in His Church. We have a conscience and a heart, and we thank God that we are able to think properly. And in our Church, serving is not just done by a single person, but we have the Holy Synod which is full of beloved fathers and we are not all alike, and so each one of us completes the other, this is the truth of it.
There are those who attack and who spread rumors, and lies are invented, but I will not leave my service to go answer each lie.
We serve by the grace of the Lord and the eye of God sees all things. We thank Christ, for He supports His Church and His work, and we continue in our work. And by the grace of Christ, we are not shaken by any words that are said, and your prayers protect us all.
Question 12:
How can I serve the youth that are far off and embrace and bring them in/include them?
H.H. the Pope:
The most successful ministry is the ministry of love, and when you as a servant love those whom you serve, your service will be 100% successful.
And service is not to be done through social media or electronically, but it is to be done by connecting personally, because when young people feel your love, they will not leave the Church.
Loving service is successful service. Fill your heart with love and you will be a fisher of every soul with this love, be a person who lives within the Church while being happy, and know that what is desired/needed today is personal communication.
It is possible to reach people and to minister to them by telephone, but it is a superficial method and does not fulfill the needed personal contact, and neither is a person able to perceive the emotions that lay hidden behind the words.
You need to make love the foundation of your service in order for it to be successful.
Question 13:
How can I reveal the Image of Christ to others?
H.H. the Pope:
Through the love that you attain from the Bible, from prayer, from the Sacraments, from your spiritual life, and from the lives of the saints and the fathers that teach you, then your heart will be filled and will overflow this love to everybody around you.Why is it that we read the Bible every day, or that our Church teaches prayer, or that we read the Agpeya and the Psalmody every day, or that we pray the Tasbeha Praises, or that we fast, or that we read the Synexarium every day? We do all these things so that the Image of Christ may form within us and that It may imprint upon us, and so that our lives may be pleasing before God.
Question 14:
The requirements for monasticism are very lofty and I desire to live the life of a solitude and worship.H.H. the Pope:
It’s not about becoming a monk but it is about filling your heart with the love of God. Complete your studies and be a good student, because the monastic life does not just accept everybody. Also, make several visits to monasteries, be a mature person, make sure you have been completely satisfied with life and that your family is pleased with you/have given you their blessing, then apply to the monastery and the Lord will open the door for you and things will move forward very smoothly.
Monasticism requires very qualified souls. What is more important than “beginning” a monastic life is that you continue in it and that you attain Christ. It is not difficult for a person to begin the monastic life and be in it for a short while and then forget about it, but that is not the right way.
We must be very careful, especially after the incident that took place at Abu Makar Monastery (Dayr Aba Maqār), this incident has made us pay much closer attention as to who enters the monastery and to those who live there.
Monastic life is serious and it is a life of austerity/abstinence, and this may be why the Committee on Monasticism stopped accepting new monks for a period of one year, and after that there will be requirements for each entrant and it will be required for each entrant to be well-qualified.
Question 15:
What does your Holiness think about a girl leaving Alexandria to go get married in Upper Egypt?
H.H. the Pope:
What is important is for there to be harmony between the two individuals, and if you are a contented person, your life will be very successful.
Question 16:
I do not feel the Lord at all and I really want to feel His Presence.
H.H. the Pope:
There must be a sin in your life. This is similar to a patient lying in bed but refusing to accept the medicine, or the doctor, or advice. I plead with you, if you feel the absence of God in your life, pay attention. Your church is before you and you can go meet with any priest so that he may sit with you, show you compassion, and give you guidance, but it is important that you be the one to take the first step.
The question the Lord Christ asked the paralytic was, “Do you want to be made well?” (Jn 5:6). If you have the will, you will succeed.
Question 17:
What has been the most difficult thing for you since becoming the shepherd of the Church?
H.H. the Pope:
Honestly, it hasn’t been just one thing, like the attacks that have taken place on the churches, but one of the most painful things has been the presence of a stubborn person who insults the Church and her fathers, a person who has lost all respect and decency, but the Apostle Paul says, “Being reviled, we bless” (1 Cor 4:12).
It is difficult to see a person who is a son of Christ having an impure tongue. But in general, the blessings of God and His graces are new every morning and they comfort and encourage us, and there is nothing that is impossible for God, and at the proper time He works all things out.
