This afternoon at the papal residence in Cairo, H.H. Pope Tawadros II received members of the Arab Pharmacists Union from Egypt and various Arab countries. Secretary-General of the Arab Pharmacists Union Dr. Ali Ibrahim provided an overview of the Union – established in Cairo in the year 1945 and now permanently based in Jerusalem since 1966.
The Union was founded with the aim of enhancing the Arab profession of pharmacy on a global level and is interested inArab pharmacists professionally, academically, and socially, besides its defence of the Arab world and concern for strategic issues such as national pharmaceutical security and the combatting of underdevelopment and disease.
On April 2 of every year the Union celebrates “Arab Pharmacist Day,” and consequently H.H. was chosen to be honoured as ‘Person of the Year.’ Also, on the 55th anniversary of the founding of the Arab Pharmacists Union and the Jerusalem headquarters; the Union presented H.H. with the Union Shield and Certificate of Honour, and in appreciation of H.H. as the first Arab pharmacist to reach such a high degree.
During the meeting H.H. spoke of three things he had learned during his time at the Faculty of Pharmacy:
1. Knowledge – Knowledge at the Faculty and the field of pharmacy in general is highly advanced.
2. Creativity – How to provide patients with proper access to medicine.
3. Humanity – We deal with humans and living creatures in their fatigue, during their most painful circumstances.
H.H. also discussed three matters which drew his attention while studying at the Faculty of Pharmacy:
1. Precision – Punctuality in time and response in any kind of work.
2. Order – Drugs are to be taken in an orderly manner and at fixed times, and order comprises half of the form of beauty.Also, through his studies he learned order in work and service.
3. How one can comfort the other – All the efforts carried out by pharmaceutical companies and pharmacist are for the comfort of the human. It is not about accepting the other, but rather a diligent effort in the comfort of the other.
H.H. thanked the Union for their honour and shield, invited them to visit the monasteries, and concluded by presenting those in attendance with an Icon of the Holy Family and the book, “Famous Coptic Doctors and Pharmacists.”
