His Holiness Pope Tawadros II inaugurated today, Friday, an exhibition of the art of bronze icons at the headquarters of the Institute of Coptic Studies in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Cairo, in the presence of the Lithuanian Ambassador, Arturas Galionas, and several diplomats, church rabbis, and professors of the Institute.
The icons are by the Lithuanian Artist Dr. Alexandras Alexeyevas, and they include icons of Jesus, the Virgin St. Mary and many saints, including Egyptians, such as St. Anthony and St. Makari.
During his opening speech, His Holiness said that art is an important link between peoples and nations and that Egypt and the Coptic Church are distinguished by art throughout history, and this exhibition is a good opportunity to learn about a new type of Christian art.
The opening also included speeches by the Lithuanian ambassador and Dr. Isaac Ajban, dean of the Institute of Coptic Studies and the icon-artist.
After the opening of the exhibition, His Holiness and the guests inspected the exhibitions of the Coptic Art Department at the Institute.
The inauguration was attended by the pontiffs of the church, H.G. Bishop Tomas, Bishop of Qusiyyah & Mir, H.G. Bishop Ermia, the General Bishop, H.G. Bishop Makary, General Bishop of Southern Shoubra, and H.G. Bishop Sidarous, General Bishop of Izbat El-Nakhl churches.
