This evening, St. Mark’s Cathedral in Abbaseya hosted the celebration of the Bible Society of Egypt, marking the 140th anniversary of its work in Egypt.
The celebration was witnessed by His Holiness Pope Tawadros II and the heads of the Christian denominations in Egypt, Dr. Andrea Zaki, Head of the Evangelical Community, and His Beatitude Patriarch Ibrahim Isaac, Patriarch of the Coptic Catholics, on behalf of Metropolitan Nicodemus, Patriarchal Vicar in Cairo for the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Alexandria and All Africa, and Fr. Derek Jeffers, President of the International Union of Book’s Role and the leaders of the Bible Society of Egypt.
The heads of the denominations viewed a panoramic exhibition that contained many advanced written products. The celebration program included passages of hymns and church tunes, and words by the heads of the denominations, and concluded with a speech by His Holiness the Pope, during which he addressed three words:
1-God who gave us the blessing of the Holy Bible: “The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.” (John 6:36)
The Word of God is truly the spirit that gives life to all of us, and man does not enjoy a word with the depth and richness of life that God intended for him except through the Holy Word, and the opening of the Book of Psalms says: “Blessed is the man… in His law he meditates day and night” (Psalms 1,2), God gave us the blessing of life and gave us what guides us in this blessing so that we can take it, live it, lives in us, and prepare with it for heaven. This is the holy word, the blessing that God gave us in the form of the Holy Bible, the holy books in the Old Testament and the New Testament.
2- The Church that presents and explains the Holy Bible to us:
The Church is concerned with presenting the Word of God, and the Coptic Orthodox Church uses the Bible throughout the year. There is what is called the Book of Katamars, and the Church innovates as it presents the Word of God. Example: We read one chapter in the Bible over the course of an entire month, which is the month of Kiahk, and at the end of it we celebrate the feast of Birth according to the Eastern calendar. We read the first chapter of the Gospel of our teacher Luke the Evangelist, which is a long chapter consisting of 80 verses, and we read it divided into four weeks, and we read one chapter divided into four Sundays in the month of Kiahk, and through it we live in the story of creation that God created, then it fell into sin and disobedience, and then God planned salvation through the incarnation of Jesus Christ.
3- The Bible Society of Egypt: presented the book in many digital images, and its development extended over 140 years, and those in charge of the Bible Society of Egypt and the thinkers are always thinking about how to present the Word of God in these appropriate and modern images that serve everyone, and that there should not be a person deprived of the Word of God.
Therefore, there is the Bible that is suitable for the blind, as well as the one that is suitable for boys by presenting the heroes of the book, and there is the one that is suitable for girls by presenting the princesses in it, and there is the Bible for young people, and also the Bible with references, and in many forms suitable for gifts for adults and children in various situations, and in multiple languages, including the Coptic language. The Bible Society of Egypt serves all our churches.
