North Sinai from the beginning was part of the Diocese of Jerusalem and the Near East until 1996. It separated from Jerusalem during the time of Pope Shenouda III and H.E. Metropolitan Abraham, Metropolitan of Jerusalem, with its first Bishop, who is Bishop Makari, as a bishop of all Sinai, and after his passing of July 25, 1996.
On September 9, 2001, Bishop Cosman was ordained as the first bishop of the diocese of North Sinai, and the diocese of the Sinai was divided into the two dioceses: North Sinai and South Sinai.
